A Nixie tube is a special display. The tube, essentially a glass envelope containing shaped cathodes and filled with neon gas, displays numbers, symbols and letters. The Nixie tube was invented in 1936 by Haydu Brothers Laboratories, who named it “Numerical Indicator Experiment No. 1”, abbreviated NIX-1.
Nixie tubes were widely used for retail displays between the 1950s and 1970s and dominated the market; even on the screens of the stock price on Wall Street. With the advent of LED technology, which was cheaper, more versatile and easier to use, the Nixie tube faded into the background in the mid-1970s. Fortunately, thanks to a group of enthusiasts, Nixie technology has been preserved and we can create these nostalgic, high-quality clocks.

The Nixie Tube
The technology behind the operation of the Nixie tube is complicated, but that is precisely why it is fascinating. The luminous neon glow, the visibility of the numbers even when they are not lit, the open character of the clock and the vintage look make it a statement piece in any interior.
The Nixie tubes are filled with gas. Where does the light come from? Light is produced by a chemical process called ‘gas discharge’. Simply put, electrically charged particles shoot through the tube at high speed and collide with gas atoms. The atoms then ionize: a gas discharge is created and light appears. Gas discharge is harmless.
